A breastfed infant with poor weight gain can be defined as:
- An infant with weight loss continuing after ten days of age, or
- An infant who has not regained birth weight by two weeks of age, or
- An infant with weight gain below the tenth percentile beyond one month
of age, or
- An infant with a maximum weight loss of > 10 to 12% of their
birth weight.
In a study of 686 Italian newborns, who were solely breastfed
according the Baby Friendly Hospital guidelines, 53 (7.7%) had a
weight loss 10% or greater in the first 3-4 days of life. Maximum
weight loss occurred on day 3-4 for infants born vaginally and on day
4-5 in infants who were born by caesarean section (
Manganaro, 2001
).
