A few principles need to be kept in mind when a breastfed child develops an illness:

  1. When the sick infant is ready to suck from a bottle he/she can breastfeed.

  2. Minimize the separation of the mother and the infant. If the infant needs a prolonged course of IV antibiotics, the infant should be placed in an area of the hospital where the mother can stay with the baby so that she can nurse. We need to encourage the mother to continue to nurse the baby at the breast.

  3. If babies need oral supplements, they need to be supplemented in a physiologic manner.
