Case Study 25

A term infant with a birth weight of 3200 grams has been transferred to the NICU due to pneumonia. The infant was born after an uncomplicated pregnancy and did well until 8 hours of age when she developed tachypnea and a requirement for 30% oxygen. A chest x-ray revealed pneumonia, and a sepsis work-up was done and she is on antibiotics. Mother had been planning to breastfeed the baby and she had nursed at the mother's breast several times before she got sick.

Q1: What needs to be done so that the mother can continue to breastfeed?
