This section discusses the initiation of breastfeeding in a healthy,
full-term infant and common problems that occur.
Many issues associated with breastfeeding
initiation are related to putting the baby onto the breast.
This is not something that
one can learn completely from reading a book or working through Breastfeeding Basics.
In order to be able to help a breastfeeding mother put her infant to the breast
successfully, one needs to observe and work with practitioners who are skilled in
helping mothers and infants learn to breastfeed.
These practitioners include physicians from the
fields of pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine and
preventive medicine,
nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants,
lactation consultants and others.
