All babies are different. Mothers who have had experience breastfeeding may say that their first baby breastfed without any difficulty, their second baby had more difficulty learning to breastfeed, and a third baby, again, breastfed easily. Some babies seem to be born knowing exactly what to do and how to nurse at the breast. Others need to learn this. Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both mothers and babies. New mothers need to realize it may take a week or longer before they and their new baby are breastfeeding well. Mothers need to try to relax and continue to work with their baby during this time. Stress has been shown to decrease milk ejection (let down) ( Memorize Newton, 1948 ).
