All babies are different. Mothers who have had experience breastfeeding may say that their first baby breastfed without any difficulty, their second baby had more difficulty learning to breastfeed, and a third baby, again, breastfed easily. Some babies seem to be born knowing exactly what to do and how to nurse at the breast. Others need to learn this. Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both mothers and babies. This time of learning can be difficult, painful, and frightening for the new mother. The new mother usually is tired, wonders if her baby is getting enough to eat, and may have sore breasts. Mothers need to be encouraged to rest, and call their doctor, their baby's doctor, a lactation consultant or nurses in the nursery for help if they are worried or have questions. Mothers need to continue to work with their baby on breastfeeding during this time. New mothers need to realize it may take a week or longer before they and their new baby are breastfeeding well.
