Breast milk is clean. It does not become contaminated by bacteria. In areas of the world where sanitation is a problem there is no question that infants who are fed formula suffer from recurrent bouts of gastroenteritis leading to a poor nutritional state ( Memorize Habicht, 1988 ).

In areas where water is carried like this:

where washing of clothes is done as here along the River Nile:

in areas where children are not defecating in latrines,

bacteria can easily contaminate water and food causing infectious disease.
