Case study 10

A mother at 26 weeks gestation who is on bedrest and medication for preterm labor asks you whether she should breast feed if her baby is born prematurely.

Q1: What should be discussed? Please check all that apply.

1. Mother's breast milk is best for all premature infants.
2. If the baby is born at less than 29 weeks gestation, infant formula is better.
3. Studies show better mental developmental outcome for premature babies fed breast milk.
4. Mothers have to pump regularly starting soon after birth.
5. Premature infants fed breastmilk have less infections so may tolerate feedings better.
6. Breast fed preterm infants may need extra supplements of protein, calcium, phosphorus, Vitamin D and iron depending on how premature they are.
7. A mother can start pumping when the baby is ready to nurse at the breast.
8. If a mother can only pump a little milk, it is better to feed formula.
