This child was not getting enough maternal breast milk. He received some supplemental formula while attempting to increase the mother's breast milk supply. By three months of age he was weaned to formula and had improvement in his growth curve. When a breast-fed infant falls off the growth curve in the first 2 months of life one should suspect that the child is not getting enough calories and needs further evaluation. This should include evaluation for medical problems in the child and evaluation of breast milk supply. |
