A mother with narcolepsy was treated with amphetamine during
the pregnancy and lactation.
Amphetamine was transferred into breast milk and
was more concentrated than in serum.
However due to the large volume of distribution,
only a small fraction of the dose was transferred to the infant. The
infant developed normally
(
Steiner, 1984
).
In a second study,
no neonatal
insomnia or stimulation was observed in 103 nursing infants whose mothers were
taking various amounts of amphetamine for a medical condition
(
Ayd, 1973
).
These results may not apply to women using amphetamines illicitly,
where the purity can vary and dosages are continually increased.
